Switchable glass

Switchable glass, often referred to as smart glass or privacy glass, is a revolutionary technology that allows users to instantly transform transparent glass to opaque glass with a flick of a switch, a remote control, or even a smartphone app. This dynamic feature is energy efficient in both residential and commercial settings.

How does switchable glass work?

Switchable glass typically uses Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. In its default, power-off state, the liquid crystal molecules are scattered in different directions, creating a frosted appearance that blocks visibility.

When an electrical current is applied, the liquid molecules align themselves so that light can pass through the film, making it transparent and clear.

This rapid transition is what makes this switchable glass “smart,” allowing users to have instant control over privacy, light, and glare.

Why choose switchable glass?

  • It provides on-demand privacy, eliminating the need for curtains or shades and offering a sleek, modern, and minimalist look.
  • Allows users to control light, glare, and heat gain.
  • By controlling natural light, it can contribute to cutting lighting costs and significant energy savings.
  • Unlike traditional windows and curtains, it is easy to clean and maintain.
  • In its opaque state, the glass can serve as a high-definition rear projection screen, making it suitable for presentations, advertising, and entertainment.

Types of switchable glass

  • PDLC—polymer dispersed liquid crystal—is the most common; ideal for privacy applications. It switched between frosted and transparent.
  • SPD—suspended particle device controls light like a dimmer. It is great for sunshades and automotive windows.
  • Electrochromic glass—changes tint with applied voltage
  • Thermochromic—responds to temperature and light changes.

Switchable Glass key features

  • Changes state from transparent to opaque in milliseconds.
  • Blocks harmful UV rays.
  • It is durable and made up of scratch-resistant material.
  • It is customizable and can be cut to various shapes and sizes.
  • • An opaque state can serve as a high-quality projection screen.
  • It has a smooth surface and, hence, is easy to clean.

FAQs

No, smart glass is very energy efficient and consumes very little power—typically about 3-5 watts per square meter when in the “on” state. When in the “off” state, it uses no electricity at all.

Standard switchable glass thickness ranges from 10mm to 12mm. It can also be customized for multi-layered laminates for safety glazing.

The lifespan of smart glass is long as compared to traditional glass, ranging from 5 to 10 years or even longer depending upon the usage and installation.
